Helen Rice, founder of Art Makers Denver, believes that when people occupy their hands and minds with creativity, the world will be a more peaceful and positive place. The artistic matriarch of old town Littleton and owner of Willow – An Artisan’s Market started this 3-day makers event to provide a venue for creative people to learn and exchange innovative techniques and ideas.
The Cheyenne-raised Air Force brat came to Denver and worked as an accountant in the oil and gas industry for 20 years before finally taking the leap to follow her dream and open Willow in 2004. While Helen doesn’t consider herself an artist, her imaginative vision is clear in the carefully curated handmade goods that fill her 11-year-old artisan’s market. On any given day, Helen can be found discussing each of her artist’s work in affectionate detail, pointing out a new stenciling technique on a ceramic piece, or giving her shoppers a glimpse into the lives of the artists she represents.
